From 1890 to 1980, the Don Valley Brickworks was one of Canada's pre-eminent brickyards. At its peak more than 43 million bricks a year were manufactured for use in the construction of homes and buildings across Canada. Many of Toronto's most prominent buildings were made from Don Valley brick -- Massey Hall and Old City Hall are two examples. In the late 1980s the site was expropriated by the City of Toronto, the TRCA (the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority), and the Provincial government. In the 1990s the City and TRCA raised approximately $6 million to restore the site's quarry as a park and natural area. The Don Valley Brick Works Park is awe-inspiring: a haven for wildlife and naturalists alike, it is at the heart of Toronto's ravines. Opened in 1996, the park is managed by Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation. The Don Valley Brick Works Park is worth a visit in any season. Evergreen's focus has been the site's 16 historic factory buildings. The buildings -- a collection of brick structures from the early 1900s and industrial sheds from the 1950s -- have been revitalized through a process called "adaptive re-use." The result is Evergreen Brick Works -- a community environmental centre with programs that celebrate the site's unique geological, industrial and natural heritage. Cyril Smith performed as an off-screen piano accompanist in several of the 30-line Baird system television broadcasts of 1935 and joined the BBC when they took over. It was at the BBC's early television studios that he met his second-wife-to-be pianist Phyllis Sellick. In 1934 Cyril left the BBC to take up an appointment as professor of pianoforte at the Royal College of Music. Cyril and Phyllis married in 1937 pursuing solo careers. During the second world war Cyril performed concerts for ENSA but in 1941 he and his wife began performing together as a piano duo at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts making many international concert tours for ENSA and the British Council touring the Far East in 1945 where the hazards to contend with included small animals lodged in pianos and out-of-tune instruments. Original release: Folkways Records 8975, 1957 Recording by Gordon & Valentina Wasson in Oaxaca, Mexico Participants: native Mexican curandera (witch-doctor) Maria Sabina, a male Mazatec indian, the Wassons and some research friends of theirs. Comments: This field recording is of substantial historical interest, both as the earliest known vinyl document of people under the influence of hallucinogens, and as part of the Wasson couples legendary forays into remote Mexican mountains on the trail of an obscure mushroom cult. Wasson's exploits became the subject of a Life magazine article which is a watershed event in the history of psychedelics, and the psilocybin shrooms would attract interest from the whole academic/literary/ethno-botanic hallucinogen set in the late 1950s. Although the Mazatec mushroom culture has been well documented over the years, this particular LP has drawn less attention than Wasson's works and the many subsequent essays and books published, but is obviously worth attention. The actual contents feature curandera Maria Sabina (who would later become famous, as part of the Wasson effect) eating the shrooms and setting out on a transcental journey to invoke the mushroom spirit, reporting with a steady flow of words her experiences. The reports are spoken in her native Mazatec dialect, but an ambitious translation/transcription attempt by a linguistic expert can be found on the accompanying booklet.
